Title

'Les Types de la Commune', 1875

Caption

Left: Commander-in-Chief Napoleon La Cécilia. Depicted as an authoritarian figure in a smart uniform, he symbolises the caricature of military command in the Commune, seen as pretentious and rigid.
Centre:

Commander and barricade engineer Napoléon Gaillard. He symbolises the planner of revolutionary actions, with a serious but somewhat naive air.

Right: the Federates from the working-class neighbourhoods of Ménilmontant-Charonne. Caricatured as typical fighters of the Commune, rough and dishevelled.

Colour illustrations from a series of 12 plates published in Le Figaro's album "Les Type de la Commune" (Paris Commune). 1875 edition illustrated by Bertall and Henri Monnier.
