Caption

Left: a sailor 'Pétroleur' (male arsonist). An imaginary figure of the incendiary Communard depicted as a drunken sailor, motivated more by vice than by conviction.

Centre: a police commissioner. Caricatured as a casual, idle petty bourgeois, indifferent to public order.
Right: avengers of Gustave Flourens. Supporters of the martyr of the Commune depicted as threatening thugs indulging in blind violence.
