Title

'Les Types de la Commune', 1875

Caption

Left: The Return of the Bastion. An ironic depiction of a group of national guardsmen leaving a fortified position in a theatrical manner. This suggests the amateurism of these improvised fighters.

Centre: Artilleryman responsible for aiming a cannon, symbolising the dangerous popular militarisation of the Commune.
Right: En route to Versailles. A group of women leaving Paris, symbolising both the misery caused by the Commune and the supposed responsibility of its supporters.

Colour illustrations from a series of 12 plates published in Le Figaro's album "Les Type de la Commune" (Paris Commune). 1875 edition illustrated by Bertall and Henri Monnier.
