On the left: Police Prefect Raoul Rigault, wearing a red sash, symbol of insurrectionary power. He embodies the repression of the Commune as perceived by its opponents.
In the middle: a Garibaldian, a volunteer inspired by Garibaldi's supporters and symbolising the commitment of international revolutionaries.
On the right: the Minister of Justice, representing the traditional legal order.
