Title
Joseph François Dupleix.
Caption
Joseph François (Marquis de) Dupleix (1697-1763). In 1742, he is named governor general of all of the French establishments of the East India Company. From then on, there would be no pause in his attempts to transform this strictly commercial establishment into a territorial one, contrary to and against the British, as well as his own government. Dismissed from his duties and repatriated to France in 1754, he dies there ruined and in anonymity.
