Caption

Charles Maurras (1868-1952). French journalist, essayist, politician and poet, he created the Action Française, a daily royalist and antisemitic newspaper. Admirer of Mussolini and Franco, his writings had an influence on Salazar; though a germanophobe, he did not reject the Nazi sympathizers in his ranks. Elected to the French Academy in 1939, he applauded Petain's coming to power and was the incarnation of a collaboration "in dignity", not announced but effective, before being accused of sharing intelligence with the enemy and condemned to perpetuity in 1945.
