The Golden Temple, also known as Harimandir, in the Punjabi city of Amritsar is the most sacred of many Sikh shrines in South Asia. The inner sanctum, in the centre of the complex is known as the Akal Takht. It was built in 1609 by the sixth guru, Guru Ram Das (1479-1574).
