Title

Table setting for Now Ruz, the Persian New Year.

Caption

Now Ruz, the Persian New Year celebrations last 13 days, the final day being an occasion for special family ceremonies. Part agrarian festival, part fertility cult, the custom possibly dates from Babylonian times. The traditional Now Ruz table is set with seven different types of foods: wheat or lentil sprouts (rebirth), semanu wheat germ dessert (holy), apples (health) dried lotus (love), garlic (medicinal), sumak (triumph of good over evil), vinegar (patience). A copy of the Qur`an is also placed on the table. Photographer: Christine Osborne
