The Dome of the Rock occupies the holy site from which Muslims believe the Prophet Muhammad made this Night Journey to Heaven. The dome is covered in gold leaf and the lavish tilework around the base of the drum features calligraphic texts from the Qur`an. There is a tiny marble prayer-niche in the cave beneath the rock.
