The 34m high Dhamekh Stupa dominates the site of Sarnath, where Buddha delivered his famous sermon on the `Middle Way`. The great Buddhist Emperor Ashoka later built scores of monasteries and stupas at Sarnath, which became an important place of pilgrimage.
