According the the legend, a monk from Kucha named Kumarajiva arrived in Dunhuang in 384. He was riding a wonderful white stallion who fell ill. During the night, the monk dreamed that his horse was talking to him, telling him that he was not a real horse but a dragon who had helped him to travel in the worse places. From then on, the monk could go on by himself. When the monk woke up, the horse was dead. He had the Pagoda built for him
