View from the raised temple in the Grand Carré des Champs Elysées where the concert took place. The Parisians admired a parachute jump from the gondola of a hot-air balloon.
Paris, Basset Manufacturer d'Estampes et Fabricant de Papiers Peints
Since the second half of the Directoire's rule, balloons were used to bring a touch of grandeur to public celebrations. They were often organised by Garnerin, the inventor of the parachute, who made numerous balloon ascents. Within the consulate he became a somewhat offical aeronaut and a particular favourite of the Parisian crowds.
