For his coronation Napoleon I asked Garnerin to organise an aerostatic experiment for the celebrations in Paris.
The evening ended with a firework display at eleven o'clock in the evening followed by the ascent of a large balloon decorated with flags and surrounded by four other aerostats. An eagle and an imperial crown were illuminated by three thousand coloured lights placed around the gondola. The painting consists of a balloon moving freely in the wind. The next day, before landing in the Rome countryside, the imperial crown broke off on the Néron tomb. The coronation balloon was suspended over the dome of Saint-Pierre de Rome where it remained until 1814.
