On 15th September 1870, the Prussian army had reached the outskirts of Paris. The town's population had depleated after being besieged for 133 days. 67 balloons left Paris between 23rd September 1870 and 28th January 1871. 66 were occupied by a lone pilot sometimes accompanied by one or several passengers. The gondola contained numerous carrier pigeons transporting telegrams destined for the provinces. The balloons also transported numerous letters with the inscription "Balloons assembled."
