Plate created in 1985 for the bicentenary of the death of Jean-François Pilâtre de Rozier. On 15th June 1785, Jean-François Pilâtre de Rozier attempted to cross the Channel by balloon with Romain. His aero-balloon, known as "La Tour de Calais" was a craft that used two different techniques: a hydrogen balloon and a hot-air balloon. It was seven hours and seven minutes before they took off into the Boulogne sky. Headwinds shook the aerostat and the he superior balloon became punctured falling onto the hot-air balloon. The machine's fall was sudden and it eventually crashed in Wimille. The two occupants who had remained in their positions were struck in the fall. Pilâtre de Rozier was killed instantly and Romain took his last breath a few minutes later.
