On 15th September 1870, the Prussien army was on the outskirts of Paris. The town's population was dwindling and had been under siege for 133 days. 67 balloons left Paris between the 23rd September and 1870 and 28th January 1871. The most famous amongst them being "l'Armand Barbès" which left Paris on 7th October 1870 with the Interior Minister, Léon Gambetta and his secretary Eugène Spuller on board to return to the National Defence commission's headquarters in Tours.
