Info+

On 1st December 1783 more than four hundred thousand people flocked to the Tuileries. At forty minutes past one, a gunshot rang out to announce the balloon's departure. Charles the physicist and the youngest of the Robert brothers took their place in the gondola in the shape of a chariot. The balloon rose majestically above the applauding crowd. The two pilots thanked the people of Paris, waving their hats until one of them fell to the ground.
The design of this plate is called "fallen hat."
