Charles the physicist and the Robert brothers invented the hydrogen balloon in 1783. The first free-flying balloon took off from the Champs de Mars on the 27th August 1783. On 1st December 1783, Charles and the youngest of the Robert brothers took off from the Tuileries on board a gas balloon, known as a charlière. They landed in Nesle la Vallée.
