Etienne Montgolfier was born in 1945 in Vidalon, near Annonay. He died in 1799. Younger brother of Josephe-Michel by five years, he is the second inventor of the hot air balloon. He entrusted the architect Soufflot with his plans for different Parisian buildings and those for the Faremoutiers church, near Coulommiers. Its in this village of Brie in 1771 where he met Jean-Baptiste Révellon, owner of a paper-making industry in Courtalin not far from Faremoutiers. He asked Etienne to build him a new paper-making factory, which was constructed on the site of the former hotel of the Fermier Général Evrard Titon du Tillet, situated in the suburb of Saint-Antoine in Paris, which he owned since 1763. Etienne designed industrial buildings whilst preserving the area's sumptuous gardens that stretched across nearly a hectare. It is in these gardens that the Montgolfier brothers would carry out their first aeronautical experiments in Paris.
