Margival. While Hitler thought in 1940 that he could invade England and was looking for an advanced base, he decided after the Allies attempted a raid on Dieppe in the summer 1942, to secretly build a huge command center in France. To have a fixed base to coordinate the defense of Western Europe. His choice fell on the communes of Margival, Neuville and Laffaux, in the department of Aisne, where he served as a corporal during the First World War. 22,000 workers will then build 475 reinforced concrete bunkers in a militarized zone of 90 square kilometers. The largest building, nicknamed “Constance”, measures 108 meters long. It will be the largest German communications center of the Second World War. Hitler will have his own bunker with private chalet where he will only go once: June 17, 1944. The camp will then be used by NATO forces until 1966, then as a commando training center for the French army until 1993. Here, the small Ravin du Loup Museum which brings together an interesting collection of German uniforms, weapons and equipment.
