Louis Napoleon Bonaparte was elected President of the French Republic in 1848 but various parties tried to out him. Convinced that he had the support of the people he organized a coup d'etat which took place on Dec. 2nd, 1851. After a referendum in 1852, he became Emperor Napoleon III.
