Page 11 recto from a sketchbook with 17 pages., draftsman (artist): Monogrammist DS (draughtsman), c. 1850 - c. 1950, draftsman (artist), inorganic material, paper, chalk, black and colored chalk, height 252 mm x width 325 mm, beach (as place of recreation), hut, cabin, lodge, A lightly sketched scene rendered in pencil with small touches of color shows a room with vertical wooden panels at the back and a long counter or table across the middle ground where several figures stand and sit. Behind and around the counter are small, loosely drawn figures wearing hats and caps, some seen in profile and some facing forward, and a figure in a uniform with a peaked cap stands near the right side. In front of the counter a childlike figure in a colored cap walks past, and near the foreground a reclining figure rests on a chaise or cot with head propped and body shaded in darker pencil. To the right foreground a seated person bends forward with head down and hands near their knees, and other partial figures and heads are sketched around the edges. Above the counter faint suggestions of hanging canopies, flags, and shelves are visible, and the overall drawing uses light, sketchy lines with occasional areas of shading and small red and blue color accents.
