Large billowing clouds of smoke rise from fires near a cluster of low buildings and a wall along the bank, and flames and dark smoke are depicted behind the crowd. Small boats and columns of rowed vessels are visible on the water farther out. On the right a church with a tall spire stands behind trees and a stretch of embankment where figures move or climb. In the foreground along the shore there are fallen horses and prone bodies, and a few people struggle in the water while one rider remains partially mounted. The sky is crosshatched and filled with cloud patterns, and the whole scene is rendered in fine line engraving with detailed shading.
