In the foreground a seated woman in a flowing dress looks up with an anguished expression while several men in period clothing surround her; one man kneels and holds her hand, another leans forward with an outstretched arm toward her, and others stand nearby wearing tricorn hats and coats. Behind them a formation of soldiers with long rifles is lined up, and further back the landscape includes rolling fields and a cluster of trees near the horizon. The scene contains detailed textures of fabric, foliage, and ground, and the figures’ garments show buttons, folds, and decorative trims.
