Beneath the tree a man in simple clothing reclines on the ground, leaning back on one arm with a staff resting beside him; his head is tilted upward and his facial hair and worn garments are finely etched. Near the man, a large bear-like animal sits on its haunches, holding a rounded object against the tree with its forepaws while looking toward the man. In the foreground there are clumps of foliage and a basket or bundle of gathered produce. In the mid- and background a stand of slender trees recedes into the distance and a softly contoured landscape stretches beyond. The scene is rendered with dense cross-hatching and detailed line work throughout.
