Ship at a bank, print, printmaker: Lambertus Hardenberg (1822-1900), The Hague, c. 1837 - 1900, paper, chine collé, etching, etching on chine collé, height 75 mm x width 99 mm, river (landscape with figures, staffage), boat propelled by man or animal, A wide expanse of pale, textured paper shows fine ink lines forming a waterscape with a tall, narrow mast rising from a small boat at the shoreline, a seated figure near the boat, and a standing figure near stacked crates. Cloud outlines stretch across the horizon and faint sketchy lines suggest distant boats on the water. The foreground includes rippling water lines, scattered specks and smudges on the paper, and areas of denser crosshatching indicating shore and boat details. The right edge shows the suggestion of more piled objects and partial figures rendered in thin, delicate strokes.
