He holds a thin rod or brush in one hand and rests the other near a small dish on a draped table, where a penlike tool lies beside the dish. To the right, an easel or panel shows a faint sketch of a figure wearing a hat, rendered in lighter lines. The scene is rendered in a monochrome engraving style with fine crosshatching and detailed textures on fabric, hair, and background.
