Piranesi conducted preliminary studies for more than eight years for this series of 250 plates, which was published in four volumes. He produced the prints between ca. 1756 and 1757. The series also includes prints by or after other printmakers, including Francesco Bianchini and Girolamo Rossi., ruin of a building, architecture, column, pillar, Curia Hostilia, An engraved architectural drawing shows a vertical cross section of a classical column and entablature within a bordered plate. The top area displays a heavily textured cornice with layered moldings and a rough, sculpted band beneath it. Below that, a series of horizontal, parallel hatched surfaces form the stepped profiles of the molding and frieze. Midway down, a pronounced rounded molding projects outward above a fluted capital that steps down into a flat abacus and a wide necking area rendered with fine vertical lines. On either side of the central column section, rough, shaded rock-like textures frame the composition, suggesting cut surfaces. The lower portion reveals the upper shaft of the column with dense vertical hatching and a base transition into a broad plinth set above a textured ground plane.
