Piranesi conducted preliminary studies for more than eight years for this series of 250 plates, which was published in four volumes. He produced the prints between ca. 1756 and 1757. The series also includes prints by or after other printmakers, including Francesco Bianchini and Girolamo Rossi., ruin of a building, architecture, grave, tomb, Italy, A vertical engraving shows architectural and archaeological elements in a pale, sepia tone. At the top is a classical façade with a triangular pediment and a central arched recess, flanked by small decorative mounds and fragments on either side; beneath the arch hang three amphorae-like vessels with a long tapered object suspended below. Below that, a textured cross-section of masonry projects into the open space, showing a stepped interior cavity and a rough stone surface; more pottery and small debris lie along the horizontal ground line at both sides. Near the bottom a second horizontal band displays a lintel and a recessed chamber with several rounded vessels and another long tapered object hanging beneath. The image is bordered by a thin ruled frame and has a strip of cursive inscription along the lower margin.
