Milk bend (original title), Four cows in a meadow, print, printmaker: Willem de Zwart, c. 1885, paper, etching, drypoint, intaglio printmaking technique, etching and drypoint, with plate tone, print in brown, height 128 mm x width 200 mm, meadow, pasture, cow, A sepia-toned etching shows three cows standing in a rustic fenced pasture. The foreground cow faces away, revealing the curve of its back and hindquarters with textured lines suggesting fur. Another cow stands partially behind it, angled toward the viewer with its head turned slightly, showing facial features rendered in cross-hatched strokes. A third cow stands to the right, looking forward with visible ears and a snout, its body marked by darker patches. A wooden fence runs across the scene with overlapping rails and posts, and rough grasses and ground textures fill the space beneath and around the animals. In the background there are dense trees and foliage suggested by layered, linear marks, and an abstracted rectangular hay or bale shape sits near the fence. The entire image is composed of fine, expressive linework and varied hatch shading.
