These prints were published in two volumes from 1777 onwards., lake, landscape with ruins, Actaeon changed into a stag: as punishment for seeing her bathe, Diana changes Actaeon, the hunter, into a stag (Ovid, Metamorphoses III 193), A sepia-toned landscape drawing shows rolling hills, clustered trees, and a small rocky cliff with a waterfall feeding a calm body of water in the foreground. Several nude figures stand or sit at the water’s edge, with one person extending an arm toward another and others wading or seated on rocks. On the right, a clothed figure holds a long pole and stands near a dog beside the shoreline. In the upper left, dense foliage frames a ruined classical structure partially visible among trees, while distant hills and scattered clouds stretch across the sky. Birds fly in the open sky and reflected ripples appear on the water surface.
