Father Time pulls aside the curtain of the ruined stage to reveal the burning theatre. Amidst the ruins sits the sorrowful personification of the Amsterdam Theatre with the coat of arms of the city and a burnt beehive, from which the bees have escaped, in her hands. Below the scene, a cartouche with the title and the famous verse by Vondel ('The world is a stage: everyone plays his role and gets his share').
