Patent granted by the States of Holland and West Friesland for a map of the Rijnland Water Board, 1687, T' Hoogheymraedschap van Rhynland, print, patent, Ornamental cartouche with a text in which the States of Holland and West Friesland, in accordance with the patent of the States General, grant a patent of 25 years to the dike warden and water board members of Rijnland for the production and publication of a map of the Rijnland Water Board. This cartouche was specially designed by Romeyn de Hooghe for the second edition of the map (1687, the first edition appeared in 1647)., printmaker: Romeyn de Hooghe, Romeyn de Hooghe, printmaker, paper, etching, engraving, height 255 mm x width 318 mm, Person, States General, Rijnland Water Board, States of Holland and West Friesland, ornaments, art, An ornate ink engraving fragment shows elaborate scrollwork and floral garlands across the top, with flowing acanthus leaves and clustered blooms; on either side hang draped animal carcasses and strings of fish rendered with fine hatch lines; a decorative crown sits near the center beneath the garlands, surrounded by curved ornamental cartouches and ribbon-like elements that intertwine with carved shell motifs and tassels; the composition is densely detailed with crosshatching and stippling on aged paper.
