Visiting the Sick, The Seven Works of Mercy, print, Part of a series of seven works of mercy with depictions in an ancient setting., printmaker: François Hutin, Dresden, c. 1730 - c. 1750, Saxony, paper, etching, height 233 mm x width 164 mm, 'aeger curatur', one of the (seven) Acts of Mercy, A detailed monochrome etching shows a crowded scene with many figures gathered in the foreground, several seated or crouched on the ground and some holding or tending to others; most figures wear draped clothing and have visible hair and expressive faces and gestures. In the midground a tall column with carved relief stands on the left and a group of classical buildings with columns and a pediment occupy the right, with a tall, slender obelisk visible between them. In the background there are distant architectural elements and a mountainous landscape. Above the scene large billowing clouds fill the sky and an airborne winged figure appears among them. The overall image is composed of fine linework, crosshatching, and etched textures.
