Clothing the naked, The Seven Works of Mercy, print, Part of a series of seven works of mercy with depictions in an ancient setting., printmaker: François Hutin, Dresden, c. 1730 - c. 1750, Saxony, paper, etching, height 233 mm x width 164 mm, 'nudus vestitur', one of the (seven) Acts of Mercy, A detailed monochrome etching shows a classical architectural setting with tall fluted columns and draped fabric hanging from a beam, a partially visible column topped with a carved capital, and a domed structure in the background. On a raised platform a robed figure stands near the column, leaning forward with one hand at the chin and the other holding fabric, while another person beside them lifts a large cloth toward a group below. Several figures at the base reach upward with outstretched arms and turned faces, their garments gathered and flowing. In the foreground a seated figure bends over a woven basket containing an infant, another seated person nearby looks on, and a reclining figure rests on a ledge at the left. Architectural details such as carved panels, steps, and a rope with a loop are visible, and the scene is rendered with fine linear shading and crosshatching.
