In the foreground, small rowboats with standing figures move across the water while silhouetted workers push or pull a barge at the near edge. A bridge with an arch spans the river further back, and a cluster of buildings with pitched roofs, chimneys, and a larger classical pavilion with a balustraded roof and circular window sit behind rows of trees. Distant spires and domes rise above the rooftops toward the horizon. The sky is filled with layered clouds rendered in fine hatch marks, and the whole scene is framed by a thin rectangular border.
