Allegory of the Augsburg Confession, print, Netherlands, 1600 - 1750, printmaker, paper, etching, height 177 mm x width 132 mm, 'Confessio Augustana', 'Augsburger Konfession', Augsburg Confession of Faith, A detailed monochrome engraving shows a robed female figure seated on a raised circular platform, one arm extended upward and the other resting on an open book placed on the platform; she wears flowing drapery and a radiant emblem on her chest. Around the platform stand a group of men in scholarly or clerical attire, some holding papers and scrolls, one holding a long scroll up toward the seated figure, and another seated on the ground writing in a book. To the right a man in a cap leans back and looks upward while another kneels nearby holding a staff. In the background an obelisk rises amid foliage and a cloudy sky, and trees frame the left side. Scattered on the ground are open books, loose sheets, and a round shield-like object with decorative markings, while a rosary and a small cross lie near the seated man at the right. The scene is rendered with fine line work and cross-hatching, creating textured shading and detailed clothing folds.
