In the foreground several figures in period clothing are depicted pulling ropes and handling logs or bundles near the water's edge, while others stand or sit nearby. Architectural details such as windows, shutters, arches, a stepped gable, and a tower with a flagpole or weather vane are visible. Reflections of the buildings appear in the water and small boats or vessels are moored along the canal. Vegetation and wooden fencing appear along the banks, and a cluster of distant rooftops and chimneys can be seen beyond the bridge.
