Thick defensive walls and towers surround the city, with gates interrupting the wall at several points and fortified bastions along the perimeter. A curving, elevated rampart or embankment encloses a distinct oval district containing more clustered buildings and narrow streets. Several churches or tall spired buildings rise above the rooftops, and a few larger multi-towered complexes and courtyarded compounds are visible. The shoreline and water are shown along one edge, with docks, piers, and a bridge leading into the city. Open squares and market-like open spaces appear between rows of buildings. Hilly, textured terrain and scattered isolated structures lie outside the walls, and shading and fine linework give the scene depth and a hand-engraved appearance.
