Numerous sailing ships and rowed boats fill the surrounding waters, many showing billowing sails and flags, and several vessels are depicted with puffs of smoke near them and figures on deck. On the land near the walls there are groups of soldiers and small formations of men, some standing on ramparts and others gathered near the shore, with a few cannons positioned on bastions. The sea is rendered with wavy lines and small rowing boats and larger ships scattered farther out, and small islands or sandbars appear in the distance. The image includes finely hatched shading, crosshatching on buildings and ships, and ornamental smoke clouds from cannon fire.
