In the middle ground a fortified town with walls, towers, and a tall spire sits on a hillside, with smaller buildings clustered inside and outside the walls and people and wagons near the gates. Beyond the town rolling fields and distant hills stretch toward a body of water dotted with sailing ships. Trees and scattered bushes punctuate the terrain, and groups of figures and soldiers are visible on paths and ridges across the landscape. The overall palette is monochrome ink on aged paper, with detailed crosshatching and fine strokes defining clothing, horse tack, architectural features, and natural textures.
