Numbered: 6., printmaker: Frans Hogenberg, Cologne, 1577 - 1579, North Rhine-Westphalia, paper, etching, height 212 mm x width 281 mm, Person, Frédéric Perrenot, Fronsberger, Karl Fugger, Eighty Years' War, Bergen op Zoom, Period, 1577-09-13, A densely built town with many tightly packed gabled roofs and several church towers sits behind a high fortified wall and gate through which a procession of uniformed soldiers is passing; outside the wall a formation of armed soldiers with long spears or pikes stands in ranks facing the gate while a small group of officers or leaders stands nearby, and further forward in the foreground several men operate and load large cannons and handle barrels and gear; along the riverside a few figures walk or stand, and two men carrying long poles move along a sloped path by a round defensive tower; the scene is rendered in fine monochrome linework with hatching and crosshatching, showing detailed clothing, helmets, weaponry, carriage wheels, and masonry, and there is a band of printed text along the bottom edge.
