Print originating from a scrapbook with title pages, ornaments, etc. on blue paper, disassembled in 1983. According to a note on the verso, the print was located on p. 108 of this album., sacrifice, Roman religion, persecution of believers, Rome, A detailed engraved scene framed by an ornate arch shows figures around an altar with smoke rising; in the foreground, three naked children hold and spread a large draped cloth while a soldier in armor stands nearby with a spear and shield; a hooded figure tends a brazier and another seated figure holds tools or implements and sits on a raised platform beneath drapery; architectural columns and statues form the background opening to an exterior view where a crowd, a burning pyre, and a distant pavilion on a hill are visible; the frame is decorated with coin-like medallions bearing profile portraits, stacked rectangular panels along the sides, and scrollwork embellishments at the top and bottom.
