In the foreground a dirt track runs diagonally with a group of oxen being driven by several figures, one person walking beside them and another standing nearby. To the left low rolling vegetation and clustered trees surround a small cluster of thatched cottages set on a slight rise. Toward the center and right the marshy riverside stretches into the distance with reed beds, a few small boats on the water, and tiny figures in and near the boats. Far on the horizon silhouettes of windmills and low buildings are visible, and scattered clumps of grass and bushes dot the foreground margins.
