This print is part of an album., printmaker: Jan van Ossenbeeck, after drawing by Nikolaas van Hoy, Vienna, after painting by Caravaggio, Italy, publisher: David Teniers (II), Brussels, grantor of privilege: Spanish crown, 1660, Lower Austria, paper, etching, height 186 mm x width 152 mm, David Teniers probably produced an oil study on canvas or panel (so-called pasticcio) of all the paintings in the collection of Leopold William of Austria, which served as models for the printmakers. It is not always clear whether the pasticci were made by him or by his studio. Not all pasticci have survived., Cephalus inadvertently kills Procris, A monochrome etched scene shows a seated person draped in flowing cloth leaning against a tree trunk while holding a thin stick, looking toward a standing bearded man who wears a short tunic, cloak over one shoulder, and sandals; the standing figure extends one arm outward and rests the other hand by his side. The background is filled with densely hatched foliage and tree trunks, and the ground beneath their feet displays textured shading and curving roots. The image is framed by a rectangular border with faint marks and wear along its edges.
