This print is part of an album., printmaker: Nikolaas van Hoy, Vienna, after painting by Federico Barocci, Italy, publisher: David Teniers (II), Brussels, grantor of privilege: Spanish Crown, 1660, Lower Austria, paper, etching, height 174 mm x width 139 mm, David Teniers probably produced an oil study on canvas or panel (so-called pasticcio) of all the paintings in the collection of Leopold William of Austria, which served as a model for the printmakers. It is not always clear whether the pasticci were made by him or by his workshop. Not all pasticci have survived., the monk and hermit Jerome (Hieronymus), possible attributes: book, cardinal's hat, crucifix, hourglass, lion, skull, stone, Mary sitting or enthroned, the Christ-child in front of her, standing in her lap (or in front of her bosom), A detailed black and white engraving shows three human figures and an animal head within a bordered rectangle; a seated woman with a draped headscarf holds a small child who stands on a cushion and reaches upward with one arm while the other rests on the woman's arm, the child partly wrapped in a cloth; an older bearded man wearing a robe and a broad-brimmed hat leans toward them with one hand near his chest and the other holding a book; a lion's head with a mane appears at the lower left, looking outward; above the figures a heavy draped curtain with tassels hangs across a textured dark background, and an open book rests near the child's feet.
