David Teniers likely produced an oil study on canvas or panel (known as a pasticcio) of every painting in the collection of Leopold William of Austria, which served as models for the printmakers. It is not always clear whether the pasticci were made by him or by his studio. Not all pasticci have survived. Christ, usually holding a banner, emerges from the grave, often combined with sleeping and/or frightened soldiers., A vertical black and white engraving shows a nude, radiant figure rising above clouds with a flowing drapery around the hips and one arm raised in a blessing gesture while holding a long staff topped with a small flag in the other hand; cherubic heads surround the upper figure among the clouds. Below, several armed men in period clothing and armor react, with one standing and shading his eyes as he looks upward, another kneeling in armor leaning on a spear, and others seated or gesturing toward the sky; a rocky outcrop appears to the right and a distant low landscape with buildings is visible along the horizon. The scene is framed by a rectangular border and the paper shows some age-related spots and faint wear.
