David Teniers likely produced an oil study on canvas or panel (known as a pasticcio) of every painting in the collection of Leopold William of Austria, which served as models for the printmakers. It is not always clear whether the pasticci were made by him or by his studio. Not all pasticci have survived., the flight into Egypt: Mary, Joseph, the child (and sometimes others) on their way, Mary usually riding on an ass, A detailed black and white line engraving shows a rural scene framed by a rectangular border with a wide sky above and rolling hills in the distance. In the foreground a man leads a donkey while a woman sits sidesaddle on the animal, her arm raised to her head and garments flowing around her. Beneath them two small figures recline on the ground near rocks, one leaning against the other. Trees and dense foliage surround the central group, including a tall leafy tree and some bare branches. A winding stream or path runs through the lower part of the scene and additional trees and distant landscape elements fill the middleground. The engraving displays fine crosshatching and line work throughout.
