This print is part of an album., printmaker: Johannes Popels, Antwerp, after painting by Jacopo Palma (il Vecchio), Italy, publisher: David Teniers (II), Brussels, grantor of privilege: Spanish Crown, 1660, paper, etching, height 230 mm x width 113 mm, The print was produced after the painting by Palma (and studio) which is in the collection of the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna (inventory number GG_2655). David Teniers probably produced an oil study on canvas or panel (so-called pasticcio) of every painting in the collection of Leopold William of Austria, which served as models for the printmakers. It is not always clear whether the pasticci were made by him or by his studio. Not all pasticci have survived., St. Sebastian, tied to a tree or a pillar, is pierced by arrows, A monochrome engraved image of a barefoot, partially draped young person standing within a rectangular frame, with arms tied behind the back and an upward gaze; the figure has curly hair, a bare torso, and a cloth wrapped around the hips that falls to one side, and three arrows appear to pierce the body at the chest and thighs; the background shows horizontal engraved lines and leafy branches at the top, a textured ground beneath the feet, and soft shading throughout the figure and surroundings.
