This print is part of an album., printmaker: Quirin Boel, Southern Netherlands, after painting by Schiavone, Italy, publisher: David Teniers (II), Brussels, grantor of privilege: Spanish crown, 1660, paper, etching, height 166 mm x width 222 mm, The print was produced after the painting by Schiavone which is in the collection of the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna (inventory number GG_5816). David Teniers likely produced an oil study on canvas or panel (known as a pasticcio) of every painting in the collection of Leopold William of Austria, which served as models for the printmakers. It is not always clear whether the pasticci were made by him or by his studio. Not all pasticci have survived. Mercury summons Aeneas, engaged in building activities, to leave Carthage, A monochrome etching shows a winged figure floating horizontally on the left, reaching toward a standing young man draped in a cloak who gestures with one hand and touches his chest with the other; to their right a seated woman in flowing garments looks toward the standing man while resting one arm on a large open book or tablet and a standing figure behind her holds a tall staff or pole and wears a plumed helmet, a cloak falling over an upright support behind them, while a distant landscape with trees, a small classical pavilion by water, and tiny distant figures appears in the background.
